Storm Damage May 21, 2024

Giant oak in unit 21 (S. Slapnick)

Many trees at Pleasant Valley sustained damage during the evening storm of May 21. Amanda said 40-50 trees lost branches, and several cracked off at the base or had their roots pulled from the ground. Winds in the area were reported to have been over 50 mph (to 80?), and, from the looks of some of the broken tree tops, we suspect there was touchdown of a “mini” tornado in unit 11 (perhaps 150 yards). Amanda spent five hours yesterday beginning to unblock the trails. We cleared seven of the smaller trees and made burn piles (wildlife piles). The huge downed trunks will require a much larger chain saw. We expect cleanup efforts to continue into the winter. Some of the cracked and broken trunks were hollow and contained punky wood (soft and partly decomposed), full of holes.
